General hygiene measures and protective measures

General hygiene measures and protective measures:
Close contact with people who are infected must be avoided as far as possible. If possible, no surfaces that might have come into contact with the virus should be touched. Careful handwashing is helpful in avoiding infection. Thorough washing with water and wash lotion or an alcohol-based hand disinfectant is recommended. Touching nose, eyes and mouth with unwashed hands should be avoided.

Hygiene measures and protective measures for medical personnel:
Personnel assigned to care for patients with suspected or confirmed influenza should be vaccinated against influenza. As protective clothing, a gown, disposable gloves and a close-fitting facemask (at least multi-layer) must be worn (for requirements, see ABAS information, Decision 609). In cases of pronounced exposure, suitable goggles and appropriate respiratory protection (FFP 3, see ABAS Decision 609) are indicated.

The most important hygiene measures are careful hand disinfection and wipe-disinfection of surfaces. For more information on this, see under Disinfection.

The detailed recommendation from the CDC and WHO on what to do in the event of suspected influenza (A/H1N1) can be found here
