The Robert Koch-Institute (RKI) recommends the following disinfection measures for patients with suspected or confirmed influenza (issued in February 2006):
Hand Disinfection The hands must be disinfected with a disinfectant with proven effectiveness for the efficacy class "limited virucidal activity" after direct contact with the patient, contact with contaminated materials or objects as well as after removing gloves before leaving the sluice room.
Wipe Disinfection The surfaces in the close proximity of the patient (where there is hand contact, e.g. bedside table, bathroom area, door handles) should be wiped daily with a disinfectant with proven effectiveness for the efficacy class "limited virucidal activity". If necessary, the disinfection measures should be expanded to include other surfaces where there is a risk of contamination.
Equipment and Medical Products All equipment and medical products that come into direct contact with patients (e.g. EKG electrodes, stethoscopes, etc.) should be used for one patient only or must be disinfected after use or before being used on another patient. Centralized sterilization is possible if the equipment/medical products are transported in closed containers. Thermal disinfection methods should be preferred whenever possible. If this is not possible, the equipment/medical products should be disinfected normally with a disinfectant in efficacy class AB according to the definition of the list of approved disinfectants and disinfection methods of the RKI.
